Katherine Gustafson

writer and editor

Why use a professional writer or editor?

Using a professional to shape your written materials is one of the best business decisions you can make. Nothing will turn your audience off faster than wordiness, awkward phrasing, or bad grammar. And nothing will gain their confidence better than fluent copy that engages interest and clearly explains your work.

How do you work?

I contract with clients for one-time projects or for ongoing, regular work. At the beginning of our work together, we will discuss your needs and goals and settle on a method of collaboration. I am responsive and deadline-driven -- you’ll receive high quality work on time.

Do you know about my field?

I’ve written on a wide range of topics, from architecture to women’s rights to paper production, but prior knowledge of a given field has little bearing on my success in meeting your goals. Knowing how to research and understand the relevant information quickly -- including knowing how to figure out which questions to ask -- is the key. And coming at a topic with fresh eyes can actually be an advantage in writing about it clearly.

How much does it cost?

The cost depends on the parameters of the job. I can give you a quote once I have an idea of your needs. I can offer hourly or project-based fees, depending on the project and your preferences.

Do we need to meet?

I work with the vast majority of my clients over email, though I often speak to them on the phone initially to discuss the project and figure out the way forward. Some clients I never speak to and others I meet in person, but regardless of the nature of our contact I enjoy maintaining collegial relations with all my clients.

What do I need to provide?

What you’ll need to give me depends on the project, but in many cases it will involve documents, information, references, and/or contacts that pertain to the assignment. The most important thing you’ll need to provide is a carefully considered sense of what it is you need help with and how you think I can help.
